Glitterball 1977

Something of a quaint notion now, when multiplexes are given over to imported content for children without much thought, The Children’s Film Foundation was a British operation which targeted young audiences with wholesome family fare. Never reaching the commercial heights of Disney or Pixar, their films are charming and simple; 1977’s Glitterball is a good example. Clocking in at less than an hour, it’s the story of Max (Ben Buckton) and Peter (Keith Jane), two teenagers who join forces to protect a tiny spherical alien from authorities when it lands on earth. Harley Cokeliss’s film is certainly lo-fi, predating ET with its benevolent alien who needs protection from the corrupt earthlings and only wants to return home.
