Office Space 1999

King of the Hill creator Mike Judge’s cinematic output has been patchy; his Idiocracy satire fell on deaf ears. Office Space, a loose comedy from 1999, sees his writing/directing talents on surer grounds. Peter Gibbons (Ron Livingston) is bored and frustrated in his office job, and not much happier at home. Accidentally placed under hypnotic suggestion, he transforms his life, beginning an affair with Jennifer Aniston and devising a complex scheme to defraud the company. Judge does a good job of capturing everyman frustrations in this enjoyably lightweight depiction of themes explored with more gravity in American Beauty; the little guy who strike back has recently been explored in films like Horrible Bosses, but Office Space is sharper and funnier than most of the office-based comedies that followed.
