From Hell 2001

From a period of Johnny Depp’s career when he was stone-cold box office poison, From Hell is a powerful detective story set in 1880’s London and featuring Depp as the real life Inspector Abberline, who Alan Moore’s comic book reimagines as a psychic detective on the trail of Jack The Ripper. Depp has the requisite style to carry of a difficult role, and direction from the Hughes brothers doesn’t hold back on atmosphere, suspense or gore. If Heather Graham doesn’t quite suit the period setting, the rest of the cast do, with Ian Richardson, Robbie Coltrane, Ian Holm and the later Katlin Cartlidge all ideally cast. Horror/detective stories are ten-a-penny, but From Hell brings something rich to the table in its evocating of an opium-fused investigation.
