Solomon Kane 2009

Comic-book adaptations tend to skew towards kids, so writer/director Michael J Bassett deserves some praise for delivering a more adult adaptation of Robert E Howard’s creation that’s more in line with a Games of Thrones universe. James Purefoy is Solomon Kane, a medieval mercenary who doesn’t renounce violence for long when he seeks to rescue a young Puritan girl Meredith (Rachel Evan Wood) who has been kidnapped by the followers of sorcerer. For a low-budget stab at fantasy, Solomon Kane looks pretty good, with great costumes from James Bloomfield and some well-rendered monsters to slay. Support from Max Von Sydow and Pete Postlesthwaite add a touch of class to this above-average excursion into sword and sorcery.
