Waking Life 2002

Fans of the Celine and Jessie characters played by Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in the Before Sunrise/Sunset/Midnight trilogy should check out this animated film from the same director, Richard Linklater. They pop up in one segment of this off-beat study of the phenomena of lucid dreaming, with Wiley Wiggins as a young man who stumbles across various characters in his investigation. Linklater later used the same rotoscoping techniques in his adaptation of Phillip K Dick’s A Scanner darkly, drawing on top of actual footage, and result is often beautiful and occasionally startling. Waking Life is an animated film for adults, and has a niche appeal for anyone looking for alternative content. Just don’t ask what the mend-bending shenanigans mean.
