Writer/director Luc Besson has managed a seemingly endless conveyor-belt of thrillers as producer including the Taken and Transporter movies. The French auteur demonstrated his skills with this offbeat 1985 thriller, which introduces Fred (Christopher Lambert) in the midst of a hectic car chase. Smashing his saloon car into a subway station, Fred discovers a sub-culture of oddballs under the streets of Paris, and begins a romance with Helena (Isabelle Adjani). Besson’s clever film dispenses with the plotting of a normal thriller and amps up character and music, thanks to some choice songs contributed by Eric Serra. If some of Besson’s later work as producer has seemed conventional, there’s nothing ordinary about this delightfully oddball film.
