Metropolitan 1990

Writer and director Whit Stillman’s career started with a genteel bang with this well-observed comedy of manners from 1990. Shot in wintry NYC locations, Metropolitan follows Tom Townsend (Edward Clements) in his pursuit of the wait-like Audrey Rouget (Carolyn Farina) over the festive period. Townsend is an outsider to the clique Audrey is part of, and has to gain the confidence of Nick (Chris Eigeman) and Charlie (Taylor Nichols) to win Audrey’s heart. Long on chat, observation and unrequited romance, Metropolitan is a gentle examination of love amongst the chattering classes, and brings the uniquely gifted characters to life with a heady mixture of laughs and muted pathos.
