The Hunter 2011

Daniel Nettheim’s 2011 thriller is an outdoors story that mixes environmental concerns with corporate conspiracy, fused neatly together by the story of Martin (Willem Dafoe), a highly-skilled mercenary hired by sinister biotech company Red Leaf to track down a rare Tasmanian tiger. But the beast itself isn’t Martin’s biggest problem; although the local people fear and oppose him, his developing relationship with Lucy (Frances O’Connor) threatens to give him a wider perspective on his mission, questioning his right to follow the Red Leaf plan. From a novel by Julia Leigh, The Hunter is a wintry, tough film, but one that finds its hear in Dafoe’s impassioned performance, with Sam Neill as a capable adversary.
